Dealing with Risk: How to Place Big Bets and Minimize Regret with Wilson Carter | Ep. 87

Wilson Carter

Wilson Carter is the founder and CEO of Clutch. They make the coolest and most portable batteries that fit in your pocket. His journey has not been easy. It has been a rocky ride to get his business off the ground.

Wilson understood from a young age how lucky he was to grow up in America and when he graduated, he embarked on a journey to give back. He volunteered to teach abroad in Columbian public schools, which were not very good. There he met the former NACo president, and his story inspired him. He wanted to turn it into a novel and a movie, but he faced a lot of objections, and many doors were shut on him.

However, his confidence was unwavering, but he started Clutch at a very low point in his life. He was heartbroken as he ended a relationship that was very special to him because he was pursuing his dream. He also couldn't get a job despite graduating from a very good school and having tons of experience.

He had an idea and was finally able to develop a prototype of what he wanted after years of trying to get it done. He took a camera, some photos, made a video, and then texted everybody he knew asking them if they wanted to buy a clutch. He got enough people to say yes, and his first inventory was presold. That is how Clutch was launched, and they have grown extraordinarily well for the last two years.
